Civility and Performance -Do We Make the KUT? This week I spent some time with the students and Superintendent of Miami Valley CTC a career based regional High School and Adult Learning Center. They serve 2500 students and 5000 adult learners in SW Ohio. They offer over 40 programs on campus and 17 satellite programs in other schools. Their student performance is outstanding. This is a public school for ordinary folks becoming exceptional. They have to turn away over 300 students per year due to capacity. From students, security guards, secretaries, staff and administrators the ethic of hard work and civility is palpable. Recently in lieu of a student walkout against gun violence they had a day long “learn in” on Kindness and the acceptance of others. Employers compete for graduates with upwards of 6 offers per student. One of the core values they teach is “use words that make the KUT; kind, useful and truthful.” One can’t help but observe that their performance and civility reinforce each other. “By their fruits you shall know them.” -David Ramey
