“Great Planning is Rehearsed Spontaneity!” -Dwight Eisenhower, credited as the brilliant strategist ending WWII and rebuilding Europe, reportedly noted "Remember that the plan is nothing but planning is everything." He tapped deeply into the psychology of advancement that every sports coach and artist has mastered, that the drills and discipline of practice and rehearsal constitute a pattern of thinking that in the complexity of the moment help us recognize better future choices from among lesser alternatives. Consensus on goals and direction among groups and organizations leads to more consistent outcomes when we encounter adversity and the tyranny of the urgent, which wants to drag us into the mire from which escape is difficult. Planning and anticipation lay the groundwork for wiser choices among alternatives in the fray of the moment, avoiding the glitter of "the perfect" preferring to sustain the good. -Dave Ramey
