There is a powerful quality of serenity among those whom life has completely humbled. It may have been the catastrophic loss of a loved one, a debilitating disease, loss of work, an addiction, or financial ruin. Literally made poor in spirit these souls walk among us inwardly sure of themselves and their true grounding in mercy, hope, and love. For these each moment is a gift to be savored for they are on the path of wisdom and grace. Perhaps one does not actively seek out these experiences of loss to become more whole. They seem to find us all at some point. Perhaps this is the meaning of the scripture passage “be you perfected as your Heavenly Father is perfect”. But human history reveals deep beauty and strength, grit, and resilience out of those troubled pathways which find us all.
